Offense vs Defense:
Offense: Offense is when your team HAS the ball and is trying to SCORE.
Defense: Defense is when your team DOES NOT have the ball and wants to get the ball back. A good way to remember this is that the word defense starts with the letter "D" and "does not have the ball" also starts with the letter "D".
Remember to watch the game you are cheering for. Match up your cheers and chants to what is happening in the game. There is nothing worse for a cheerleading team than to do a defense chant when your team is on offense.
When do you cheer during a game?
- During game play - when there is NO injured player. When a player is "down", your team should wait patiently until they get up. When they do, please cheer them on no matter which team they belong to.
- During a time out.
- During half time: Usually during half time of any sport, is a good time to cheer. The cheerleaders are usually permitted on the field or court to entertain the crowd. At the top of this page is a video of the CB East Varsity cheerleaders doing their half time show at a basketball game. Notice, that they have great presence on the court as they used the center of the court.
